YOUNG CITIZENS OF THE WORLD TAKE A STAND FOR THE CLIMATE

ILO Committee, debate on the issue: "How to address the impact of global warming on the resurgence of child labor around the world?"
The 5th Edition of ClerMUN 2024 Brought Together 170 Young People from 5 Countries Around UN-style Debates on Climate Change and JusticeTo share hope—but more importantly, solutions—for a better future.
“Upheaval and Climate Justice”—this timely and urgent theme shaped the debates of the fifth edition of the international ClerMUN* conference, held from November 4 to 7, 2024, at the Hôtel de Région in Clermont-Ferrand.
Over 170 young participants from Croatia (Zagreb), Turkey (Istanbul), Kuwait (Kuwait City), Lyon, Ferney-Voltaire, and Clermont-Ferrand came together to work and exchange ideas on the environmental, geopolitical, and social challenges linked to climate change. The delegates debated, drafted, and voted on resolutions following official UN methodology and protocols.

At the opening ceremony, renowned experts—Alain Le Roy, Fabienne Pompey, and Antoine Sautenet—shared their insights on the devastating effects of climate change, as well as the measures being implemented by the United Nations, the European Union, businesses, and citizens to tackle these challenges, along with the obstacles they face.
They later joined the delegates in committee sessions, providing valuable perspectives that enriched the debates. These expert contributions offered students a broader framework for reflection and the tools needed to craft ambitious, well-informed resolutions.

15 to 25 Countries Represented in Each Committee

Over the course of three days of debate, each committee addressed a specific topic:
-
The Security Council focused on the security of small island states facing rising sea levels, as well as actions to combat the decline of major lakes and rivers around the world.
-
The World Health Organization (WHO) committee discussed the health impacts of natural disasters worsened by climate change and the need for an international framework to manage pandemics potentially caused by melting permafrost.
-
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) examined how to ensure safe and dignified passage for climate refugees, and how to establish a legal framework for environmental displacement.
-
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) addressed food and water security in countries threatened by desertification, while exploring sustainable agricultural models to feed a growing global population without harming ecosystems.
-
The International Labour Organization (ILO) committee focused on corporate and multinational responsibility in the face of global warming, and its connection to the resurgence of child labor.
-
Finally, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) reviewed geopolitical disputes linked to development projects in sensitive areas, such as sovereignty over Guyana and dam construction projects on the Nile in Ethiopia.

Resolutions for a Better Future

The discussions led delegates—representing between 15 and 25 countries per committee—to draft resolutions proposing practical solutions to the challenges posed by climate change and its social and economic impacts. These resolutions were adopted with the goal of fostering stronger international cooperation and ensuring a fair and just transition for all.
The debates at ClerMUN 2024 highlighted concrete solutions to today’s global challenges. The engaging discussions and adopted resolutions in each committee showcased the delegates’ strong commitment to working together in building a better future. These outcomes will serve as a starting point for future initiatives by these young global citizens.
