what's oiM ?

L'Organisation internationale pour la Migration (OIM) se consacre à la promotion d'une gestion humine et ordonnée des migrations.

topics and resolutions

Topic 1: How can the flows of refugees from regions impacted by climate change be guaranteed a safe and sound global circulation?

In an increasingly interconnected world, climate change is having an increasing impact on the displacement of populations. In 2023, what is now known as environmental migration resulted in more than 26.4 million internal displacements. Unlike 'classic' migrants, climate refugees are not protected by international law, yet they face the same dangers. So, how can we ensure their safe movement?

Resolution:

In response to this problem, Türkiye has proposed a resolution based on international cooperation. This resolution suggests, for example, the creation of a support fund for countries hosting large numbers of climate change refugees, as well as the modification of the refugee definition in the Convention to include the environment as a migration factor.

Topic 2: What international legal framework can be put in place for climate refugees? First of all, as the world becomes increasingly interconnected, the impact of climate change reverberates far beyond rising sea levels and extreme weather events. As the planet warms, a new group emerges: climate refugees, who are forced to leave their homes due to environmental degradation and natural disasters. Unlike traditional refugees, who flee persecution or conflict, climate refugees face a unique set of challenges and legal ambiguities. The scale of the problem is also enormous. It is predicted that by 2050, at least 1.2 billion people could be displaced by climate-related events. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) plays a crucial role in addressing the climate refugee crisis, which is why our committee worked on finding the best frameworks to help climate refugees around the world. The resolution we discussed was presented by the delegation from India.

Resolution:

During the two days, our committee debated different ways to help refugees. Some of the solutions that were found include:

• Regional policies to address specific issues in different countries, creating unified research in the climate sector to better predict and prepare for upcoming climate disasters.

• Creating international collaborations between different countries to ensure the secure circulation of refugees. • Adding the term "climate refugee" to the 1951 Paris Agreement convention.

• And countless others. The debate was productive, with each delegation contributing insightful information to the discussion.
